My First Impressions with BioShock

I must say - this game has me hooked. The first evening I started playing, I stayed up until the wee hours of twilight and had to force myself to bed, being the responsible working adult that I am. So I take a brief pause from the game to catch my breath and write about my first impressions.

The ambiance in this game is amazing. At the start of the game, the plane you’re on crashes into the ocean. Somehow, you survive and must swim to safety. Being that I am a weak swimmer in real life, this scene made me somewhat uncomfortable with its realism - I felt my chest tighten a bit.

BioShock - plane crash

On dry land, the journey to Rapture, the underwater city, is very creepy and scary. It’s dark. There are weird noises. The place is run-down, dirty, and decaying. With any new suspenseful game, I find myself crawling slowly and cautiously, moving a step at a time, fearfully peering around corners because I keep thinking a bad guy is going to pop out of the shadows or jump out of the water. I don’t know what to expect!

Every time you find a new…magic power (I forgot what they’re called), you get a cartoon tutorial that looks sickeningly cheerful:

BioShock - tutorial drawing

The game uses an interesting fusion of old architecture, drawings, and design (it takes place in the 1960s) with steam technology and genetic modifications. This whole game has a depraved twist to it…what an interesting style, I like it!

I will leave you with my most disturbing moment in the game so far. I’m chasing down a psychotic surgeon to get a key from him. As I step foot into the hospital, I look down and see, written in blood:

BioShock - do no harm

The sarcastic use of the Hippocratic oath is both ironic and disturbing to me. =( I actually paused for a couple of seconds staring at the ground and thinking “oh my GOD! NOOO!! He’s CRAZY!! He’s INSANE!!!! AAAAAAH!!!!!!”

That’s it for now. I’ll be back later with my final impressions of the game.

Bananas Help Scratched CDs

Ok, this sounds ridiculous, and I don’t know why this works, but it did for me.

Last weekend I was playing Gears of War (again) when I started encountering the scratched parts of the disc. Usually, an error message pops up for the XBox 360 saying “disc read error, clean it and try again”, and then it promptly resets the system…doh!

I cleaned the disc. It didn’t work. The disc read error always occurred at the same spot, as Fenix is cautiously wandering through a narrow hall in the building. I managed to cheese the system a couple of times by having him dash through the hall. I imagined I bypassed the scratched portion quickly so it didn’t have to read it. Haha, my logic humors me =)

But then I encountered a place I couldn’t “run” past. It involved a huge gunfight in the middle of town, and there was no specific spot I could avoid to prevent the console from rebooting. Cleaning it again did not help. Finally, I remembered my friend showing me this video involving a banana and a scratched CD.

I admit, I was skeptical. The video claims the banana fixes the scratched CDs, and when I did it, I forgot to use the cloth after the banana peel (to help rub banana matter into the CD). Instead I went straight to the glass cleaner to clean up. When I was finished, the scratches were there, but one of the marks looked smaller.

Nevertheless, it worked when I started playing! I was able to fight through the town and continue with the game. I was very stoked!

Does anybody know why it works? Somehow I’m imagining small particles of banana getting embedded into the cracks. Obviously, the laser can’t read banana….but I’m guessing some data-loss from the scratches is recoverable. Perhaps it’s the marks themselves that hinder the laser reader? This just boggles my mind!

Ok, this sounds ridiculous, and I don’t know why this works, but it did for me.

Did Wii Influence the PlayStation 3 Controller?

I should clarify: Atari had Le Stick, Nintendo had the Power Glove back in ‘89, and Logitech & Microsoft had their motion-sensor controller, all before the Wii came out.

So I guess the more appropriate question is, did Sony see Wii’s controller, somehow feel threatened by it, and then hastily come out with the motion-sensing PS3 controller? My memory can be poor, but I vaguely remember the series of events to be rather…..suspicious. So! I went and did some research. Do you have dated articles that would paint a different picture? Let me know by leaving a comment!

PS3 Original Concept

Most of us remember images of the concept PS3 from the beginning, with its boomerang/banana shaped controller. Oh, ESPECIALLY that controller! So many people bashed it for its ugly shape and plenty of “throw it and it’ll come back” boomerang jokes appeared.

And so it starts:

Sept 15, 2005 - Nintendo Unveils Wii’s Controller
Remember - The Wii was called The Revolution back then. It was announced on this day, the simple-looking controller would feature a motion sensor that promised to revolutionize gameplay as we know it.

Nov 17, 2005 - PS3 Controller Design Here to Stay According to Sony Exec
Second article here. Sony’s executive denied rumors of redesigning the controller. The boomerang shape was here to stay, but it could undergo “minor changes”. Many continued to bash the controller’s odd shape.

Nov 22, 2005 - Microsoft releases the Xbox 360 in the US.

Mar 15, 2006 - PS3 Delay - A Good Thing?
A lot of fans (myself included) were quite disappointed to hear about this delay. It was supposed to be released in Spring 2006, but they then aimed for Nov 2006, which would be a year after the Xbox 360 debuted.

Mar 22, 2006 - Sony Confirms the PS3’s Controller Redesign
Huh? A redesign eh? Well, we’ll just have to wait and see what they come up with at E3…

May 9, 2006 - PS3 Boomerang Controller Tossed, Doesn’t Come Back
Many of those who were complaining about the weird shape now protest, saying “it wasn’t that bad, it was actually creative”.

May 9, 2006 - New PS3 Controller
So the controller looks the same as the original PlayStation controllers, whereas other consoles’ controllers continue to evolve. What’s the biggest change? The controller now features six-axis sensors for motion-sensor gameplay. However, it’s not as responsive as the Wii remote.

PS3 New Controller

May 9, 2006 - New PS3 Controller Loses DualShock Vibration
This piece of news was another disappointment for fans. I’ll also quote from the article’s official explanation:

“Pursuant to the introduction of this new six-axis sensing system, the vibration feature that is currently available on DUALSHOCK and DUALSHOCK 2 controllers for PlayStation and PlayStation 2, will be removed from the new PS3 controller as vibration itself interferes with information detected by the sensor.”

May 11, 2006 - PS3’s New Controller a Surprise to Developers, as Well?
A game developer admits that his team received the PS3’s new motion-sensing controller less than two weeks before. Some wonder if the lack of the vibration feature comes as a surprise to developers also.

May 31, 2006 - Harrison Denies Wii Influenced PS3 Controller, Says PCs Unnecessary
The president of Sony Computer Entertainment’s Worldwide Studio denies copying Nintendo’s motion-sensing idea, saying that was “stupid”. Also quoted towards the bottom of the article

“We believe that the PS3 will be the place where our users play games, watch films, browse the Web, and use other [home] computer functions,” said Harrison. “The PlayStation 3 is a computer. We do not need the PC.

Nov 17, 2006 - Sony releases the PlayStation 3 in the US.

Nov 19, 2006 - Nintendo releases the Wii in the US.

Mar 30, 2007 - The Truth Behind the PS3 Boomerang Controller
Apparently, Sony scrapped the banana controller because people were criticizing its shape. The company felt that people were already used to the old design, and any change to it would annoy players, and that wasn’t worth the risk.

On the other hand, Sony is now working to get the rumble back into the controller.

So there you have it, what do you think? Did Sony hastily add the motion-sensor feature? Would Sony have time to implement it in that time frame?

I should clarify: Atari had Le Stick, Nintendo had the Power Glove back in ‘89, and Logitech & Microsoft had their motion-sensor controller, all before the Wii came out.

Angry Gamers

Over the weekend, I stumbled upon these gamer sites and loved them all instantly! What do they all have in common? Well, they’re gamers, and they’re all angry/irate (in funny ways).

Angry Video Game Nerd

The Angry Video Game Nerd

This guy has funny facial expressions - eyes bulging, mouth agape in anger or horror, so much passion and energy for video games! He started off reviewing NES games, but has since moved onto other consoles such as Atari, Sega systems, etc. I like his commentary style - so full of sarcasm and irony!

My favorite video from here so far is Atari Porn. Hilarious! I didn’t know those games existed.

Irate Gamer

The Irate Gamer

This guy also has a strong style of sarcasm in his commentary, and he’s good at video editing. When I found this guy’s site, I had a rude awakening about Super Mario Brothers 2.

See, I never played SMB2, but I played the original, and later I played Super Mario World. I did wonder to myself…where did Shy Guys come from? I see people mentioning them in association with Mario Brothers, but I don’t remember seeing them in the games I played…maybe I have bad memory. But then I saw this video…blasphemy!

Old Grandma Hardcore

Although Grandma Hardcore’s site is more of a blog, it does contain videos of herself sounding crabby and being foul-mouthed while playing video games. She’s so cute! Sometimes she’ll try to explain the games logically (when the storyline is illogical)…and it just melts my heart, she’s so adorable!

Grandma Hardcore

Look at that dedication; she’s my role model. I want to be like her when I grow up - old and still gaming! This tough old lady plays games like God of War, Okami, Bioshock, and more! Check her out - sure she sounds frustrated at some games, but who doesn’t?
