Left 4 Dead: Survival Mode Tips part 3

Thanks to my friends, I’ve gotten four more golds last week! Survival mode definitely emphasizes team work. This is a continuation from part one, part two, and part 4.

Dead Air: The Terminal
Death Toll: The Boathouse
No Mercy: The Gas Station
Blood Harvest: The Warehouse

Dead Air: The Terminal

This map is pretty easy - you can see the zombies and special infected from far away. I was able to do this with two other friends and a CPU. Three of us had shotguns, and one person grabbed the M-16 (for the specials). First, we all grabbed pipe bombs or molotovs near the bathrooms. Then we stood on top of these newsstands and trash can.

The desk nearby has a lot more bombs that you can grab during lulls. The ammo pile and health kits are pretty close by, so ammo runs are possible for this map, provided people move up together as a group.

At one point, we finished an ammo run, and upon running backwards toward the sweet spot, my friend got pounced by a hunter near the ammo pile. I made sure to always be close to straggling friends (but not to be too close to get affected by hunter knock back) so I was able to run up and melee the hunter off. It’s important to watch each others backs, and not too far away in case they need a melee.

The tank will often run down the stairs from the left - he might even climb the van, which will slow him down even more. Sometimes he will drop from the second floor from the areas to the right. Those with shotguns should make use of the wide areas to kite and kill the tank (don’t stay on top of the newsstands). Remember - the closer he is, the more damage your shotguns do, so if he is far away, use your handguns until he gets too close for comfort.

Death Toll: The Boathouse

This map takes a lot of patience and will require at least two people. Everyone should grab M-16s. From the house, run towards the building to the left with all the picnic tables. Grab a gas tank and toss it at the first picnic table you see to the left. You want to push it up the gradual inclining hill and to the left, almost against the rock, almost or in the pine tree.

Left 4 Dead - Death Toll: The Boathouse

This is where I pushed the picnic table, and from there I was able to jump on the roof. This takes a lot of patience to get the location right. Whoever makes it up there should stay up there! Be careful of the CPUs as they like to randomly break the picnic tables. Whoever is left below will have to trigger the rescue, so grab a shotgun (for the tank) and set up gas tanks at strategic positions from the gatling gun (assuming you would use it - you should, it makes you survive longer and conserves ammo).

Left 4 Dead - Death Toll: The Boathouse

Whoever is on the roof should back up all the way to the chimney (prevents you from being smokered behind). They should be slightly to the left of the apex of the roof - a smoker will show up randomly on the right and can smoker you off. Don’t get too close to the edge of the roof on the left - you can get pounced by a hunter. Tanks can’t get to you, but they can sometimes hit you with a rock.

No Mercy: The Gas Station

For this one, everyone should grab shotguns and use handguns in order to conserve ammo. You must trigger the lift - once you reach the top, run across the roof, then jump for the room.

Left 4 Dead - No Mercy: The Gas Station

Head towards the back and left, jump through the hole on the floor. Be careful as there will be some zombies in there.

Left 4 Dead - No Mercy: The Gas Station

Everybody should get on the desk in the corner - two in the corner, and two on the side. The tank usually goes after the two in the corner, so the two on the sides should run up to him and unload their shotguns (closer you are, more damage you do!) The key is to kill him before he reaches your friends. Remember, there are pills in this room but not much else.

Left 4 Dead - No Mercy: The Gas Station

The regular zombies will come the windows, the hole in the ceiling, and rarely (but I’ve seen this happen) from the barricaded room towards the right (hence I marked it with a special Z). The tank will often climb up from the windows and go for the people in the corner, but sometimes it will drop from the hole in the ceiling (I think then he goes after the people on the side). This one takes skill and luck. One time, one of the people in the corner got smokered through the window and pulled down into the street below. Another time, the tank appeared in the barricaded hallway to the right and despawned because he couldn’t get into the room. =)

Blood Harvest: The Warehouse

Everybody should grab shotguns for this one as you will be far away from the ammo pile. If possible, everyone should grab a gas tank as the sweet spot for this map is behind the emergency door. Once you open the door, head up the stairs on the right (there are more gas tanks at the base of the stairs). At the top of the stairs, you will defend this spot. Toss your gas cans in the corner (and hope no one sets them off).

Left 4 Dead - Blood Harvest: The Warehouse

Regular zombies will come up the stairs and sometimes from the right. Smokers are pretty annoying, but the rail will prevent you from being dragged down below (don’t stand on the rail!). The tank will sometimes appear in the air vent and get stuck temporarily - if you are lucky, this will happen often. Otherwise, he often comes from the stairs, and sometimes comes from the right.

Left 4 Dead - Blood Harvest: The Warehouse

Our most successful set up had two people covering the stairs (and the door, because smokers and hunters like coming from there), one person covering the right (and the door below), and one person in the furthest corner. It may seem like this corner person has a boring job, but no - she can offer extra support for the stairs or the random zombies on the right. Since she is far from the others (ideally), she won’t be affected by hunter knockbacks (which usually occurs at the head of the stairs) and can see smoker grabs to rescue the victim quickly.

Hunters and smokers usually go after the closest person, so if I can’t kill them quick enough, I will retreat until I’m behind a friend (far away enough from knockback for hunters if possible) but melee them as soon as they get pounced or grabbed. I usually do this when I think no one else is aware there is a special infected nearby.
