FINALLY! I’d gotten 3 more golds last month but took forever getting the last gold (Construction Site) because to me and my friends, it was the hardest map. That, and my friends don’t play as much as they used to.
I tried joining public games but have had pretty bad experiences with most of them. *shudder* Oh the humanity!
One of these days, when I have some time, I’ll go back and edit these 4 page tips so they’re grouped by campaigns instead of being random as they are now. =) This is a continuation from part 1, part 2, and part 3.
Blood Harvest: The Farmhouse
Blood Harvest: The Bridge
Last Stand: The Lighthouse
Dead Air: The Construction Site
This one’s pretty simple. We all grabbed shotguns and held out in the second floor of the barn. There’s a bunch of molotovs on the table, and an ammo pile nearby, so you don’t need to worry about conserving ammo. We held out in this configuration:
Three people to the right of the bale of hay, and one lone person to the left. No zombies will climb through that window on the left - it’s too high up. When you’re running around because of the tank, be careful when you’re in front of the window - he can knock you outside, and although it’s not usually an instant death, it’s pretty painful. We split the group apart so they’re far away from hunter knock back if the other group gets pounced.
If bored, the lone person can wander up close to the hole in the wall like so (image below) but of course, be careful of smokers that can pull you out. The tank takes some time to climb up the left side, but that’s usually the best scenario. While it’s climbing, the 3 teammates closest should unload their shotguns into him. When the tank comes through the hole, he has the tendency to go after the lone player on the side.
This is pretty much it. It’s one of the easy and fun ones because you’re right next to the ammo pile and can refill often.
We did the best when we held out in the starting room. Yay for being close to ammo! Again, we took shotguns and removed the propane/gas tanks from the room. Two of us jumped on the cardboard boxes in the corner of the room (those boxes are indestructible!), and two of us held out in the other corner, one on tv, and the other on the couch.
Those on the boxes will have difficulty getting off because it forces them to crouch/crawl, so be careful of that. That said, smokers are very annoying - they can angle themselves from pretty far away and drag off a victim from the boxes, so be careful (and shoot at the door when you hear a smoker, even if you’re only hitting the door frame). That said, if the tank goes climbing after your friends on the boxes, and you’re in the other corner, be sure to run up to him and shoot him in the back if you’re not being swarmed by zombies!
If a tank climbs through the window or walks through the door, he’s more likely to go after the person on the couch. Unlike your friends on the boxes, you have more freedom to run around. The desk in the center with weapons and ammo is indestructible, so try to keep it between you and the tank. The tank will try to climb over it - try not to be there when he climbs down!
This one takes a bit of luck. One time, a friend on the box got smokered outside. We were able to kill that smoker, but there was another smoker standing even further away, and then a hunter. XD
This one takes a bit of luck as this spot is somewhat difficult. You all need to get shotguns as you will not be able to replenish your ammo. All 4 people need to get on top of the water tank, in pairs. Don’t try getting up there all at the same time - you will shove each other in the air and off your mark. Practicing a running jump onto the white nob at the front of the tank, and then another jump to get up. This will be handy if you ever get smokered down and need to get back up quickly.
For even more difficulty, your field of vision can be obscured because you’re overlapping with your partner. You will push each other outwards/off the tank, so make sure to keep holding the BACK button. Use your handguns on lesser zombies and special infected (melee is quite powerful here, since you can melee off the other pair’s climbing horde).
Kill smokers ASAP as they are really annoying and can pull people off the tanks. Although your field of vision is obscured, try to anticipate the tank by the music. If he is close by, your screen will start to shake. My friends and I say “shaky” to alert people that a tank is close by. Unload your shotguns into him as fast as possible, and he will usually die before he reaches the top.
Some of the walls to the front will crumble, revealing smokers. These smokers are annoying so they should be killed as quickly as possible. The wall to the right in the screenshot is another place smokers love to stand. These smokers aren’t as annoying, however. They will stand there and smoker someone closest to them, but the pole on the water tank will prevent them from being dragged off. Their partner, or anyone from the other pair, can melee the tongue off.
Sometimes a hunter will crawl below in front of the water tanks and scream. They can’t pounce you because of the water tanks, so peek out periodically and shoot them.
Again, part of this is based on luck. I remember when we finally got gold, all the smokers came from the sides, and we probably only had one or two smokers from the front that we killed off quickly.
There is another spot that is easier than this, and this is the smokey chimney you access from the roof. Everybody should get hunting rifles (wow, this is the first time!), arrange themselves so that it’s each person per chimney corner like so.
Edit 7-28-09: I’d like to clarify that each person should get on the highest point of the chimney (the cylindrical part that spews smoke), crouch, and then move to their respective corners so that people aren’t overlapping each other. But while you’re moving to your corner, make sure you don’t drop back onto the brick portion of the chimney - you’re supposed to float in the air. Otherwise, this spot won’t work.
Basically, kill smokers asap because they can pull you off. But if you get pulled off, just get back onto the chimney as fast as possible. Here are some locations of special infected.
When we tried this, we didn’t encounter any tanks, though it might be luck.
Again, grab shotguns because you won’t have a chance to do an ammo run. We tried several spots for this map and finally got gold in this area.
The key part is to make it difficult for smokers to drag you off, so arrange yourselves between the two red lines. Person #1 and #2 will constantly be smokered, so those two people should be ready to melee each other and soon as they hear the smoker scream “aah!”. Person #3 is a backup meleer - just melee and get back into position.
Have you ever been in a situation where you’ve been casually shooting normal zombies, and a special infected shows up, and everybody speeds up their shooting? Have you ever had it where all 4 people are reloading at the same time, allowing the special infected to smoker/pounce your team apart? That’s why person 4 should concentrate on shooting mainly special infected with their hand-guns, and let persons 1-3 shoot everything. This is not mandatory, but it’s a suggestion. Person #4 also pays attention to tank music and shaky screen to notify the team if he is climbing up from the side.
If he is, again, everybody should focus shotgun fire onto the tank and bring him down asap. He can knock you off the scaffolding, which is pretty bad.
If the tank appears in front of you (instead of on the left) be happy - he can sometimes awkwardly fall off and take some time to climb up, so take advantage of his clumsiness. The two smokers appearing below can smoker person #1 and #2 through the scaffolding, but fortunately, usually does not drag you off. However, it’s difficult to kill them as you can’t shoot them back through the wooden panels.
The smokers that appear on the same level as you are annoying as they can actually smoker you off the scaffolding and onto the floor below, causing you to run to the ladder and climb up as quickly as possible. Hunter knock backs are horrible here because everyone is pretty close together, and that’s why person 4 should concentrate of special infected. =D
Well, so that’s it for the Left 4 Dead survival tips. If you have any questions, ask away! I will do my best to answer.
